Bake Bread Not Cookies

When I got laid off one of the first things on my to do list was to start baking. Yesterday I was tempted into making "Citrus Sables" and sadly, even though I made them a teensy-bit more friendly by not rolling them in sugar - they were still cookies. I've pledged to channel any cookie baking energy that is left this week into making homemade bread.

{ Still, if you want to connect to your sense of smell zest a lime and lemon and breathe in the goodness. Wow! }

StoryCorps in SLC

I just signed up for a StoryCorps interview with my Dad. I've been wanting to do this since earlier this winter when I was working on his movie "A Life Launched", which is about his career as a rocket scientist in the missile and space industry. We're going to interview on March 26th. Interviews are archived in the Library of Congress. If you want to listen to some stories or interview someone here are some helpful shortcuts:

Beautiful Music Video

This is looks like it's straight out of an art/film festival. Very cool. Music video: Her Morning Elegance

Homemade Bread

My mom has been baking bread lately and sharing. { Thanks Mom! } We have turned out to be big fans of wheat bread. Fresh ground wheat, baked up fresh gives the bread a nutty, caramel-y flavor that store-bought can't touch.

Brown Paper Bags

Have you seen the brown paper bags, filled up and stacked by the registers at Harmon's grocery stores? There's not a lot of fuss about them and they cost $10. Why would you want to be a $10 brown paper bag? If you stop to check, you'll see there's a label on the outside of the bag listing all of the things inside. The bags are filled with things like peanut butter, oatmeal and other food. Their purpose? They are sent to the food bank to help feed the hungry.

We noticed the bags during a late night snack stop at the store. Eric picked up a bag to add to our purchases. The guy behind us in line stopped and read what the bags were about, then loaded several bags onto the conveyor. We were grateful to have been there to see this spontaneous generosity.

Yesterday, the first lady volunteered at Miriam's Kitchen in DC. "Mrs. Obama discussed the need to support food banks and soup kitchens around the country given that things will get worse before they get better." The White House Blog
