I will preface this comment by stating that I am, at this late hour of the campaign, an undecided voter. I am seriously considering some third party candidates because neither McCain nor Obama would be good for the country, for different reasons.
With that being said, this Sarah Palin wardrobe thing is a non-issue that McCain/Palin haters are making way too much of and I’ll tell you why.
1. All major party presidential campaigns spend excessive amounts of money on their candidates wardrobes these days. Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and John McCain are wearing suits that cost thousands of dollars, and shirts, ties, and shoes that cost hundreds of dollars. These are campaign expenses. Presidential campaigns are political theater, and they must dress the part. Michelle Obama is also making appearances in clothing that is a campaign expense, and all her clothing is not $148 off the rack, I guarantee ya that! I noticed the article, in reference to Obama and Hillary Clinton said “campaign money was never spent on personal clothing but that potentially embarrassing purchases could be blended into advertising budgets.” Translation- they do not count their campaign clothes as “personal clothing”, but campaign advertising budgets. Perhaps the McCain/Palin campaign should have “blended” her wardrobe and makeup into advertising budgets like the Obama/Biden campaign and Hillary did.

2. Yes, a big part of her appeal is being the everyday common person, and everyday common folk do not spend that kind of money on clothing, but they are not running for vice-president of the United States either. She, like McCain, the Obama’s, and Biden, must also look the part.

3. The fact that they had to spend this kind of money on her wardrobe, shows that she did not have this kind of wardrobe in the first place- like most people don’t.

4. Let’s face it- whether us guys want to admit it or not, there is a double standard for women when it comes to this kind of stuff. If Sarah Palin did not look exceptional on the campaign trail, she would be tore apart in the media and by people who oppose her. The very same people who are knocking her for the expensive wardrobe and make-up would be critical of her for not looking appropriate for a major vice-presidential candidate. People who oppose her like to point out that she campaigned for governor of Alaska wearing fleece and winter coats, caps, etc, but now she is trying to be different. I guarantee if Palin were to dress “common” these days, again, she would be berated by the press, and those very same people would be saying things like, “You’re not in Alaska anymore Palin. This is the big leagues now, you need to dress appropriately. “ It’s a no win for her, and a total non-issue for me.

All in good fun. I just hope we won't be viewing her fashion picks over the next four years.
